The Clinical Health Coach® training online is a flexible six to twelve week experience engaging participants in an online learning platform that includes practical and easy to follow curriculum in health coaching, healthcare communications and effective care management strategies. Professionals often choose CHC training online for its convenience and the opportunity to learn at their own pace. Materials may be reviewed as often as necessary for up to 1 year, and participants are invited to join our live telephonic practice and feedback sessions to deepen their understanding of health coaching techniques. The online format makes it scalable to healthcare systems where training may be desired for a large number of diverse healthcare professionals.
“All healthcare professionals should be educated to deliver patient-centered care as members on an interdisciplinary team, emphasizing evidence-based practice, quality improvement approaches and informatics.”
Health Profession Education: A Bridge to Quality: Institute of Medicine, 2003

- Understanding communication styles and their impact on health literacy.
Key learning for “Transform the Care” include:
- Population health strategies to identify, stratify, select interventions, track and measure health outcomes for an entire panel of patients.
- Team-based care models for patient-centered care
- The role of the Clinical Health Coach® in team-based care

Clinical Health Coach® Training Online Preparation and Time Investment
“The Iowa Chronic Care Consortium’s Clinical Health Coach® Training online is designed with sequential and participative learning in mind.”

- Mac or PC operating system
- Stable internet connection (broadband recommended)
- Updated version of Internet Explorer, Firefox, Chrome, ore Safari web browser
- Adobe Acrobat Reader
Participants may also want to consider purchasing a binder to hold printable material available throughout the training.
Online Learning Environment:
Learning new coaching and communications skills takes both time and practice, and this program is built for “gestational education”. Information is delivered through either videotaped on-camera presenters or voice-over slides. Most presentations are accompanied by easy- to- print worksheets, activities, and resources. There are no large manuals to download, although reference books are often recommended for additional learning.
Training Program Curriculum
The curriculum design for Clinical Health Coach® training online has evolved from several years of experience in providing the successful flagship Clinical Health Coach® training onsite. The two programs are intended to be highly compatible, with the potential for organizations to utilize both to train a diverse clinical workforce. Clinical Health Coach® training online focuses primarily on the practical application of a wide array of health coaching, communications and care management strategies, which makes it particularly attractive for the entire healthcare team. Curriculum is grounded, when applicable, in evidence or research-based models, practice or process. However, so much of the role of health coaching is still evolving, as are new healthcare models such as Patient-Centered Medical Homes and Accountable Care Organizations. Thus, innovation, by the very nature of healthcare reform, is an important element of the training.
The Clinical Health Coach® online curriculum content and design meets the rigor for both continuing medical education credits through the Interstate Post Medical Graduate Association and nursing credits through the California Board of Registered Nursing, an ANCC provider. These institutions assure the participant that curriculum meets the learning needs of a clinical audience, is properly referenced, and that information provided is balanced and impartial.
Modules 1 and 2 engage the learner by teaching foundational health coaching topics in 15-25 minute segments and offering additional activities and practice opportunities to cement the concepts.
Topics include:
- Describing the emerging role of health coaching in today’s new world of healthcare
- Exploring both the art and science behind coaching strategies and techniques
- Explaining the “shift” that empowers patients to set attainable health goals and more importantly, achieve health behavior change!
Modules 3 and 4 provide real life application to concepts in modules 1 and 2, plus introduce additional coaching strategies to diversify the learner’s “tool box” of health coaching techniques and options.
Topics include:
- Demonstrating effective health coaching techniques
- Practicing down to earth coaching and communications concepts that deepen the conversation with patients and families
- Focusing on key elements of a coaching conversation in a clinical environment
Healthcare Communications is spotlighted in module 5. As a valuable companion to health coaching, effective healthcare communications are critical to improving health literacy and engaging patients in active learning.
Module 5 moves into multiple key topics that serve to integrate health coaching strategies with care management models and the health coach role. Clinical health coaches are most effective when used to improve the health management of patients with chronic conditions. Successful performance in this role requires knowledge of population health management, team-based care models, proactive planned clinic visits and building the “Medical Neighborhood” of community resources. Presentations in this module are very similar to webinars and are generally 30 minutes in length.
Topics include:
- Integrating health coaching within population health management
- Discussing team-based care and care management strategies that support patient centered care
- Framing the importance of health literacy and effective healthcare communications within a health coaching model
Written Exams: There are three exams that are administered online throughout the course of the training program. Each consist of 23-34 multiple choice and T-F questions, and the participant must receive a minimum score of 70% on the exams in order to receive continuing education credits and/or to be eligible to earn a Certificate of Competency as a Clinical Health Coach®.

These faculty facilitated calls are viewed as critical to the success of the participant in gaining the required skills and competence for health coaching. Participants will receive more information about these call dates/times once they have completed the first exam (covering materials from modules 1 and 2).
Buddy Coaching Practice: It is highly recommended that participants choose a “buddy coach” to practice new coaching concepts and skills.
