Denise Promes, a Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse and Diabetes Educator with Greene County Medical Center in Jefferson, Iowa, shares her experience with the Clinical Health Coach® training online program this past summer.
As a Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse for over 23 years, I wanted a new way to interact with patients to help them achieve their goals towards better health. When I heard about the Clinical Health Coach® training class, I felt it would be beneficial, but could not imagine how I would fit it into an already busy schedule.
I was excited when I heard about the on-line class and felt it would meet my needs. The information and skills I gained in this class fit perfectly into my role as a Cardiac Rehabilitation Nurse and Diabetes Educator.
Clinical Health Coaching shifts the focus from what is important for the healthcare provider to what the patient feels is a priority for them. This changes the conversation and allows the patient to discover their own goals and motivations, which makes them more invested in change.
I have already seen positive changes from these conversations and look forward to seeing how they affect our outcomes. I found the on-line classes kept me engaged and after completing a module, I was eager to move on to the next class. Every class provided me with applicable information and the conference calls were really helpful to talk to the instructor, ask questions and get feedback on skills.
I would recommend this class to anyone who provides care to patients with chronic illnesses. I believe it is the only way for us to guide patients to make the positive lifestyle changes they need to effectively manage their disease.
